FoundYa vs HeyBuddy: How We Compare
HeyBuddy (also branded "Bark Badge" on their tech page) is one of the more established smart tag products: NFC + QR, web-based setup, scan notifications, location sharing, lost-pet alerts, flyer generation, and family access. Their marketing leads with no app required to scan and no subscription.
The "no subscription" part deserves a closer look. FoundYa does everything HeyBuddy does - plus things they can't - without the pricing games.
We're not affiliated with HeyBuddy. Pricing and features on their site can change - confirm with them directly.
The "no subscription" problem
HeyBuddy's FAQ and product pages say you don't need a subscription for a basic profile. Technically true. But the HeyBuddy Club app pushes premium tiers after you've already bought in - paywalls gating the features you'd reasonably expect (multi-pet management, deeper tools, full platform access). We've seen premium priced around ~US$40 per three months. In-app purchase prices vary by region and shift over time - check the App Store or Play Store before you commit.
FoundYa doesn't do this. Core safety, lost-pet tools, household access, reminders, vet records - all upfront, no surprise tiers. You know what you're getting before you start.
In-app purchase pricing varies by region and can change without notice. Always check the App Store or Google Play listing in your country before buying a HeyBuddy tag.
Everything HeyBuddy does, FoundYa matches or beats
HeyBuddy offers scan notifications, location sharing, lost-pet alerts, flyers, family sharing, medical storage, and reminders. FoundYa has all of that. Here's where we pull ahead:
You're not locked to our hardware
HeyBuddy requires their tag. FoundYa works with any NFC chip. A $2 blank from Amazon, a 3D-printed custom design, or one of our retail tags - same full platform either way. Our guides walk you through making and registering tags yourself in minutes. We also sell epoxy, metal, and silicone tags with the same quality and customisation as HeyBuddy's retail line.
3D-print your own tag
No other smart tag brand offers this. Design your own shape, pick your materials, print at home or through a service. Complete creative freedom over the physical tag, with the full FoundYa platform behind it.
No pricing tricks
Every feature HeyBuddy gates behind premium IAP is part of FoundYa's core platform. No "free" headline that leads to a paywall three screens deep. No discovering after you've registered your pet that the features you actually need cost extra.
NFC-first, smarter QR
HeyBuddy prints both NFC and QR permanently on every tag. FoundYa leads with NFC for a fast, reliable tap and makes QR opt-in. When you use QR, you can rotate where it points or issue completely fresh codes - no buying a new tag because the printed QR got compromised or spammed.
You own the chip
Where supported, FoundYa password-protects NFC chips and gives you the credentials. Most retail tags are either wide open (anyone can overwrite them) or locked by the vendor with keys you never see. Your pet's chip should be under your control.
Stronger lost-pet tools
HeyBuddy offers a lost button, community alerts, and flyer generation. FoundYa goes further: Sentinels, geo-targeted messaging, and timed outreach across physical and digital channels - designed to reach the right people in the right area, not just broadcast and hope.
Privacy by design
FoundYa is private until you explicitly opt in to sharing. Lost mode amplifies your reach without oversharing by default. HeyBuddy describes some guest-private fields - but always check what a stranger actually sees when they tap your tag out of the box.
Offline fallback built in
When mobile data works, finders get your cloud profile. When it doesn't, vCard-style data on the chip itself still gets your pet home. Designed in from day one, not bolted on.
Hybrid NFC stores both a cloud URL and an offline vCard on the chip. Your pet is identifiable even in areas with zero mobile reception - something most smart tags can't offer.

Questions worth asking
- What's actually free vs premium in the app today? (Check the store listing in your region.)
- Can you rotate NFC and QR destinations without buying new hardware?
- Who holds the NFC chip password?
- What happens to your data if the brand pivots or shuts down?
- What does a finder see by default - before you've configured anything?
FoundYa passes every one of these.
