How FoundYa Makes Money (An Honest Answer)

If you've used FoundYa for more than five minutes, you've probably noticed something: a lot of the platform is free. You can register any NFC chip, build a full pet profile, set up your household, get scan notifications, and activate lost mode without paying a cent beyond a one-time tag activation. That's deliberate.

But we're a business, not a charity. Servers cost money. Support costs money. The 3D printers eat filament like Labradors eat socks. So we reckon it's worth being upfront about how the money works, what we charge for, and why.

What we're not

We're not a VC-backed startup burning through someone else's cash to "capture market share." Nobody is pitching FoundYa as "the Uber of pet tags" in a boardroom somewhere. There's no growth-at-all-costs mandate, no investor pressure to monetise your data, and no plan to flip the company in three years.

We're a small team of pet owners in Australia building software we use for our own dogs and cats. That's genuinely it. The goal is to make something good, keep it running, and make pet safety accessible to everyone - not just people who can drop $50 on a proprietary smart tag from a brand that might not exist next year.

FoundYa is self-funded. We don't have venture capital, and we're not looking for it. That means we answer to pet owners, not investors.

How we actually make money

Tag sales

The most obvious one. We sell custom NFC pet tags - designed in our Tag Designer, 3D-printed in PLA, PETG, or TPU, with an embedded NTAG215 chip, sealed and shipped ready to tap. You pick the shape, colours, material, your pet's name, an icon, the lot. We print it, test it, and post it.

This is a straightforward exchange: you want a nice tag, we make a nice tag, you pay for it. No subscription, no recurring fee. The tag is yours.

BYO tag activation

Here's where it gets interesting. You don't have to buy our tag. You can grab a $2 NFC sticker from Amazon, 3D-print your own, or repurpose any NTAG215 chip you've got lying around. To register it on the platform, there's a one-time $5 activation fee.

Why charge at all? Because every tag we provision gets a dedicated scan URL, cloud profile, push notification pipeline, and a slice of our infrastructure for life. Without a nominal fee, nothing stops someone bulk-registering ten thousand UIDs for a laugh. The activation keeps things sustainable.

If you buy a tag from us, activation is included. If you BYO, it's five bucks. Either way, your pet gets the full platform - no feature gating between "our hardware" and "your hardware."

Premium plans

Some features cost more to run than others. Coordinated lost-pet outreach across multiple channels, advanced notification routing, priority support - these are the kinds of things that go into a premium tier. We're still working out exactly where that line sits, and we'd rather get it right than rush it.

The principle is simple: the core safety features stay free. If someone finds your pet and taps the tag, that works whether you're on a free plan or a paid one. Premium is for people who want more from the platform day-to-day, not a ransom on your pet's safety.

Local partnerships

Pet safety doesn't exist in a vacuum. Vets, pet shops, groomers, trainers, councils - these are all part of the ecosystem your pet lives in. We're building relationships with local businesses and organisations so they can be part of the FoundYa network in a way that's useful to everyone.

What that looks like is still taking shape, but the direction is clear: connect pet owners with trusted local services, give those businesses a way to reach the right audience, and keep the whole thing relevant rather than spammy. Think a local vet flagged in your area when your pet needs one, not a deluge of banner ads for things you don't care about.

What we'll never do

Some lines aren't worth crossing for revenue. Here's where we draw them:

"Enshittification" is Cory Doctorow's term for platforms that start good, then gradually degrade the experience to extract more money. We think about this a lot and actively design against it.

The bigger picture

There's a tension in pet tech that nobody talks about. The companies making smart tags need you to buy their tag, use their app, stay in their ecosystem. If they go under, your tag becomes a piece of plastic. If they get acquired, your data goes wherever the new owner decides.

We think that's broken. Pet identification should be closer to a public utility than a walled garden. NFC chips are universal, open-standard hardware. The data on them should be portable. The platform that reads them should be transparent about what it does and how it pays for itself.

That's what we're trying to build. Not a tech empire - just good software that helps pets get home. We'd rather have a sustainable business that serves a hundred thousand pet owners well than a unicorn that serves ten million badly.

A community, not just a platform

One of the things we're most excited about is opening up the creative side of FoundYa. We want independent designers - people with 3D printers, people who make jewellery, people with ideas we haven't thought of - to be able to create tag designs and sell them through the platform. A marketplace where creativity is rewarded and pet owners get more choice than any single company could offer.

We're not there yet, but that's the direction. More on this as it takes shape.

We're figuring it out honestly

We don't have a 47-slide pitch deck with hockey-stick revenue projections. We have a product that works, a clear idea of who it's for, and a commitment to being straight with the people who use it.

If you've read this far, you probably care about the same things we do: keeping pets safe, not getting ripped off, and supporting businesses that are honest about how they operate. We reckon that's a pretty good foundation.
